From John Lewis, to M&S and Disney, here’s a list of the best Christmas ads in 2021 from around the world.
We’re at that time of year again, when the Christmas ads we see leave us feeling nostalgic, teary-eyed, emotional and in the mood for holiday time spent with family. They also give us a sense of collective spirit.
In contrast to subdued messages of pandemic stricken 2020, brands have gone all out with their storytelling this year. From fantasy filled extra-terrestrial scenarios, to intimate tales of holiday gatherings, here’s a collection of all the festive Christmas ads from your favourite brands and retailers, including the much talked about ones from John Lewis and M&S.
Check out the best Christmas ads of 2021 that reflects a year full of change, hope and joyful optimism:
John Lewis & Partners – Unexpected Guest
The U.K. retailer is back with a heartwarming tale set to cover of ‘Together in Electric Dreams’. The two-minute advert, entitled ‘Unexpected Guest’, is a joyful story of friendship between a young boy called Nathan and the space traveler, Skye, as they celebrate the magic of Christmas moments.
M&S Food – Percy Pig comes to life for the first time EVER!
Marks & Spencer’s Christmas advert for this year features Spiderman star Tom Holland as the voice of Percy Pig. The Christmas clip, which also stars Dawn French as a festive fairy, sees Percy Pig come to life and explore the treats on offer in an M&S food hall.
Aldi: Ebanana Scrooge
Aldi has released a charming Dickensian-style take on ‘A Christmas Carol’ with a spot that follows the story of Christmas loathing Ebanana Scrooge, who is reminded of the joys of the festive season by Kevin the Carrot. It’s part of a seasonal campaign that will see 1.8 million meals donated to families that need help across the UK over the festive period.
GAP – All Together Now
Katy Perry sings a Beatles song – ‘All You Need Is Love’, while playing the guitar in GAP’s 2021 Christmas advertisement.
Disney – The Stepdad
Disney celebrates blended families with its new Christmas ad. The Stepdad is a beautiful animated short that sees a new stepfather moving in with the family at the beginning of the holiday season, and it’s such a lovely example of how families can learn to interact with each other… you are definitely going to cry at least once when watching the ad. The Stepdad is a sequel to last year’s animated short from Disney – Lola.
Sports Direct – GO ALL OUT This Christmas
It’s the most expensive Christmas advert ever. And with tennis champ Emma Raducanu and football ace Jack Grealish leading a line-up of 16 sports stars, it is bound to score highly with viewers.
Boots: Bags of Joy
BAFTA-nominated actress and ‘Doctor Who’ star Jenna Coleman plays the leading role in Boots’ festive ad for 2021. As Boots puts it, “This Christmas is all about joy.” The joy of being with friends and family, the joy of getting out there and connecting with each other.
Argos: Baubles to Last Year! Christmas is On
Another British retailer to recognise our appetite for going BIG this festive season given the disappointment of last year. The campaign shows the pure joy of Christmas and all the ways we can make a big splash. The 60-second fun spot reminds us that Argos is a decent source of inspiration for shoppers looking for that perfect gift for family and friends.
Asda: Make Christmas Spectacular
Asda’s Christmas spot which features a family gliding through the festive season on their ice skates. The ad is about making the festive season ‘spectacular’!
Morrisons: Farmer Christmas
Morrisons is introducing Farmer Christmas to the nation with its festive ad this year, following two young friends who discover the other hero of Christmas. The 60-second spot tells a tale about Farmer Christmas who works all year too in order to deliver a delicious Christmas feast to tables across the country.
Coca-Cola is another brand to into some real magic this Christmas with its festive ad that focuses on the concept of community. Featuring a story of a young boy who brings his apartment block together to celebrate the holidays, it opens with his desire to create a chimney out of cardboard boxes, ready for Santa Claus to deliver presents

Here’s a round-up of the ‘must-watch 2020 Christmas commercials’
2020 has been quite a year! The year of the global pandemic has changed us, turning our worlds upside-down in so many ways. But thankfully, a few things have remained a constant in life, one of which is the battle between brands to be crowned the ‘most popular Christmas commercials of the year’.
Christmas is a time for good cheer and festivity, time with loved ones, lots of delicious food and of course, show-stopping festive advertisements. As we creep closer to the first week of Advent, most big brands have already delivered their 2020 Christmas campaigns. This year however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you’ll notice a distinct change in tone. While festive ads were once full of glitz and glamour with budgets on the higher side and offerings getting more elaborate as the years went by, this year’s Christmas commercials are distinctly more pared-back, in keeping with the public mood after a year of much hardship.
From John Lewis and Amazon, to Marks & Spencer, McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and Tesco, here’s a round-up of the ‘must-see Christmas commercials’ that have been revealed so far:
Amazon – The Show Must Go On
Disney UK – From Our Family To Yours
Tesco – No Naughty List
McDonald’s – Inner Child
Argos – An Evening with AbracaDaisy & The Incredible Lucy
Aldi UK – Kevin the Carrot
Asda – That’s an Asda Price Christmas
Waitrose & John Lewis – Give A Little Love
Sainsbury’s – Gravy Song
Dobbies – Festive Thrills
Lidl GB – Big on a Christmas you can Believe in
Marks & Spencer
Walkers Crisps – A Sausage CaRoll
TK Maxx – The Lil’ Goat
Chester BID – Give the Gift this Christmas
Deliveroo – Christmas in On
Matalan – It’s a Matalan Christmas!
O2 – Unwrap the Magic of Christmas
Three – Everyone’s a Kid at Christmas
Papa Johns Pizza GB – Giving More This Christmas
Notonthehighstreet – The Magic of Small Things
JD Sports – #JDWonderland
Advertisers…. Don’t miss out on the chance to display your festive ads on the BIG Screen this holiday season, especially alongside the MEGA Blockbuster release – Wonder Woman 1984 on 17th December 2020.

Introducing the MBR City 2020 Diwali cinema ad campaign
Diwali – the festival of lights, is one of the most popular Indian festivals widely rejoiced by Hindus across the globe. The festival symbolizes the spiritual ‘victory’ of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. It is a time for both gratitude and happiness, and is celebrated by families and friends with the lighting of oil lamps, exchange of presents, feasting on traditional sweets and wearing new ethic outfits.
This year’s festival fell on Saturday 14th November, and even though we are still very much in COVID-19 mode, the spirit of Diwali lived on, with families celebrating responsibly and festival related events executed in compliance with COVID-19 safety protocols.
Bringing a touch of Diwali to the BIG Screen this year was Mohammed Bin Rashid City (MBR City). As part of the 6 week on-screen campaign (from 5th November to 16th December 2020) with Motivate Val Morgan, MBR City dedicated ten days (5th – 14th November 2020) to its bright and glamorous 2020 Diwali creative.
The 60 sec. Diwali creative screened across multiple VOX, Reel and Oscar cinema locations in the UAE:
MBR City has been a valued advertiser of Motivate Val Morgan since 2018, with a range of campaigns booked around the year, especially alongside festivals such as Ramadan/Eid and Diwali.
Below are two other festive ad campaigns by MBR City in 2019:

With roughly 80 days to go for Christmas, we at Motivate Val Morgan look ahead to what’s in store on the BIG screen in the month of December, and why brands should plan to include cinema in their festive media campaigns.
From mystery thriller Death on the Nile – based on the 1973 novel by Agatha Christie and Wonder Woman 1984 – the ninth installment in the DC Extended Universe, December 2020 holds festive treats for both cinemagoers and advertisers.
It has been a difficult year for a majority of industries with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and its on-going coverage dominating the news.
For cinema, Q2 2020 started off with its closure, followed by a staggered reopening between June and September – with cinemas operating at 30-50% capacity, accompanied by the lack of new content. Then came the release of two highly anticipated blockbusters – Tenet and Mulan, closely following each other, that did rather well on the BIG screen in both UAE and Saudi Arabia:
Following this high note was the official announcement of Death on the Nile, Wonder Woman 1984, No Time to Die and Black Widow pushing its release dates to December 2020, April 2021 and May 2021 (respectively).
The good news for now is that Bollywood blockbuster Laxmmi Bomb – featuring Akshay Kumar, which premiers on 9 November 2020 on Disney Plus Hotstar, will also release across cinemas in Australia, New Zealand and UAE simultaneously, on 9 November 2020. Laxmmi Bomb is anticipated to give cinema another upward push at box office in the UAE.
Laxmmi Bomb Motion Poster Trailer:
For now, December has a treat in store for everyone – cinemagoers and advertisers, with a range of highly anticipated a-list and b-list blockbusters, expected to release on the BIG screen.
The month kicks off with a brand new action comedy adventure featuring Ryan Reynolds – Free Guy, a story about a bank teller who discovers that he’s actually an NPC inside a brutal open world video game, scheduled to release 10 December 2020.
Free Guy Trailer:
Next up is Death on the Nile by 20th Century Studios, scheduled to release on 17th December 2020 . The mystery thriller directed by Kenneth Branagh is based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie, and a follow-up to 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express, featuring a star studded cast which includes Gal Gadot, Kenneth Branagh, Tome Bateman, Russell Brand and Letitia Wright.
Death on the Nile Trailer:
Just in time for Christmas will be the release of the much anticipated DC blockbuster Wonder Woman 1984 by Warner Bros. – featuring Gal Gadot, Chris Pine and Kristen Wiig. The film was originally announced for release on 13 December 2019, before being moved up to 1 November 2019, then to 5 June 5 2020, followed by 2 October 2020, and now 24 December 2020. Fingers crossed we won’t have to wait any longer than December 2020.
Wonder Woman 1984 Trailer:
Please Note: release dates for the movies listed above are subject to change.
December being the month of festivity, is something we’re sure most are looking forward to. There’s no denying that come December, the pandemic might still be headlining the news. However, cinema has always been known for providing audiences with a space for escapism – a place to immerse themselves in a story, for a couple of hours, watching feel-good content. Given the hardships we have experienced this year, in some way or another, December holds optimism among cinemagoers, given the powerful movie line-up, and presents opportunities for advertisers to target audiences who are keen to flex their spending power during the festive month leading up to the new year.
Stay tuned for the latest updates on movies releasing on the BIG screen over the next couple of months. We’ve also recently launched an attractive ‘guaranteed views’ package. Contact us if interested in starting a discussion on cinema advertising opportunities alongside any of the above mentioned blockbusters in the month of December 2020.

It is that time of year again, some say the most wonderful time of year. It’s also the time that many retailers put their hard-earned money in Santa’s sack, with Christmas campaigns tempting shoppers with stories of the season.
Not only is Christmas an ideal time to introduce brands to new customers, but it is the perfect reason to reconnect with existing shoppers.
As the festive season approaches we see more and more memorable adverts arrive on cinema screens to showcase what the big retailers have to offer – but which is the best Christmas advert for 2019?
Check out our compilation of popular and heartwarming Christmas ads from across the globe and decide for yourself!
John Lewis & Waitrose – Excitable Edgar
The John Lewis advert marks the start of the festive season and this year’s offering will melt your heart – as well as the ice.
John Lewis’ 2019 Christmas advert is about a young dragon named Excitable Edgar. Edgar is a dragon living in a small town who can’t play with the other children at Christmas because his ‘firey’ breath keeps melting all the snow.
The grown-ups also begin to turn on him when he accidentally sets fire to the town’s Christmas display.
But with a bit of ingenuity, one local girl proves that Edgar’s fire can prove useful after all.
It’s John Lewis’ first joint campaign with Waitrose and it reportedly cost £7million to make. It’s no surprise that it’s flaming good.
Walkers – All Mariah Carey wants this Christmas
This festive ad is full of everything we expect of Christmas – from red sequined dresses to elves and even Mariah Carey! Walkers have pulled out all the stops for their Christmas campaign and have called it their “biggest ever Walkers Christmas advert”.
The advert comes on the 25th anniversary of Mariah’s 1994 album Merry Christmas. And it’s said to have cost the retailers a whopping £9million to have her face on 50 million packets of crisps.
Tesco – #DeliveringChristmas
Tesco’s Christmas advert features a delivery driver travelling through time in a Back to the Future influenced celebration of the company’s 100th anniversary.
The UK’s largest supermarket has kept its festive advert closely under wraps and sent social media into a frenzy when a Tesco van was spotted on top of a house in Cheshire, England.
Tesco is the last of the major retailers to release their advert, which they have said is intended to highlight its role ‘delivering Christmas to the nation for the past 100 years’.
In the ad, a Tesco delivery driver called Joel, is transported with his van full of food to various years throughout the past century, after his van gets caught up in Christmas lights.
Visa – #WhereYouShopMatters
Visa‘s Christmas advert calls on shoppers to support the UK high street in the face of struggling sales and an increase of online shopping.
The campaign features 13 real shopkeepers including a bookseller, greengrocer, antique dealer and café owner.
Visa said the message is to encourage shoppers to think more about where they’re buying from.
Sainsburys – Nicholas The Sweep
Sainsbury‘s heartwarming Christmas advert tells a story of how Santa started out as a chimney sweep who was accused of stealing a clementine.
The retailer is marking 150 years in the business and so has set its festive ad outside the first Sainsbury‘s store in Drury Lane in 1869.
Sainsbury‘s says that the tale is a “totally true story” but in reality “Nicholas” has been created in the spirit of Christmas and there’s no real evidence of the retailer’s founders ever having saved a child in this way.
The ad is directed by award winning Ninian Doff, who has also directed a handful of commercials for brands such as Hula Hoops, 02 and GiffGaff.
Aldi – Leafy Blinders
Aldi has used Kevin the Carrot for the fourth year in a row in its Christmas advert.
New character Russell Sprout, and his Brummy gang of “Leafy Blinders“, are boiling with rage about Kevin and his family of carrots stealing the show as the star Christmas vegetable.
The sprouts are dressed in tweed caps, much like characters from popular Netflix drama – Peaky Blinders.
Tiny Tom – a little tomato – comes to Kevin’s rescue after the sprouts tie him up.
Amazon – The Singing Boxes are Back!
Amazon‘s Christmas ad features a whole host of people singing and dancing to Solomon Burke’s classic track, “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love”.
The heartwarming, feel-good advert shows families, friends, colleagues and strangers from all walks of life coming together while singing and dancing along with the cheerful Amazon boxes.
At the same time, people are giving or delivering gifts to loved ones that are, of course, inside Amazon boxes.
Boots – #GiftLikeYouGetThem
Boots shows customers how to get presents for the most difficult loved ones in your life.
The ad introduces Boots’ new range of in-store gift edits – called “Bootiques” – there to take the hassle out of Christmas shopping.
There will also be an online option to create your own Bootique so you can hint to loved ones what you want this Christmas.
Asda – Let’s Make Christmas Extra Special
Asda’s festive campaign is all about making Christmas extra special – but there’s a heartwarming story behind its advert.
The ad follows a young girl – Tilly – inspired by stories from her Grandad about Santa’s leftover magic.
The advert focuses on people who go the extra mile during the festive season, making it a special time for all.
M&S – Go Jumpers for Christmas
The best thing about Christmas is obviously knitwear, and that’s something Marks and Spencer has tapped into brilliantly for their latest ad. Directed by Jake Nava, the director behind Beyoncé’s Single Ladies video, this promo will have you jumping around with your jumpers in no time at all.
Emma Willis and Paddy McGuinness star in this year’s M&S Christmas advert.
The pair are seen at a snow-covered “M&S Food Christmas Market” where they sample festive treats at different stalls.
Other famous faces that appear in the market include popular television presenters Amanda Holden and Rochelle Humes.
Very – Get More Out of Giving
Very.co.uk showcased an emotional advert which celebrates the joy of community as stars from previous years returned to the tv screens.
It follows the residents of Chester Street as they give up their time to make sure their elderly neighbour Sidney isn’t alone at Christmas.
It is accompanied by a cover of Rudimental’s 2012 hit Feel The Love recorded by The Social Singing Choir.
McDonald’s – #ReindeerReady
This year’s Christmas advert follows adorable little girl Ellie as she befriends a lovable reindeer called Archie.
The 90-second advert follows the animated journey of Ellie who is at home and eager to play a game of ‘reindeers’ with her older sister Jenny – only Jenny is uninterested in playing games with her younger sister and slams the bedroom door on her.
Celebrate the magic of Christmas through the eyes of Ellie, in this advert which illustrates scenes recognized by parents across the world, as the whole family comes together to get Reindeer ready.
