Spider-Man: No Way Home Becomes the Highest Grossing Movie of All-time in MENA

Spider-Man: No Way Home was the talk of the MCU community for months before its release. The internet was flooded with fan theories about multiple Spider-Man fighting together in the film, and people were convinced they had spotted Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield on set.

On December 16, 2021, Spider-Man finally made it into cinemas in MENA, and worldwide on December 17. The Multiverse brought both ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ and the ‘Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ to the big screen alongside Holland’s take on the ‘Web-slinging’ hero. In addition to them, several villains from previous Spider-Man films also made an appearance, matching the expectations of the MCU Spiderman fans as well as the general audience.

The Movie has been shattering records ever since. While receiving much praise from both fans and critics around the world, it has now earned a sweet spot on the domestic box office list in the US and has become the fourth highest-grossing film of all time. The movie raked up a US$ 702.6 million in ticket sales in the US alone since its release, and US$ 1.6 billion globally, making it the eighth highest-grossing film at the global box office.

Sony Pictures MENA Marketing Director Charbel Zakhour recently announced on LinkedIn that Spider-Man: No Way Home has officially become the No.1 Grossing Film in the MENA region. This box office success reaffirms the unmatched impact theatrical releases can have in times post the outbreak of the pandemic. Spider-Man: No Way Home also demolished any preconceived notions about how much a major theatrical blockbuster could gross in these times.

As a result of this success, the industry has maintained a V-shaped recovery since the disruption caused by the pandemic, and we are looking forward to a positive year in 2022.

No one can dispute its rank as top-grossing film in the region.

“As MENA Cinema Forum matures as the largest cinema convention in the Middle East and Africa, we want to make thing more transparent to ensure authenticity of the awards that are based on third-party research.”

Box office revenue in the Middle East is set to cross US$800 million in 2021, US$1 billion in 2022 and US$1.3 billion in 2024, recovering from US$250 million in 2020 – marking the fastest recovery in the world, according to research by Omdia.

VMLY&R Dubai Named Cannes Lions Regional Agency of the Decade

VMLY&R Dubai has been named MENA’s regional best agency of the past 10 years in Cannes Lions’ first Lions Creativity Report of the Decade – an award presented to the agency that has performed best across the festival’s annual agency rankings over the last 10 years.

VMLY&R (previously Y&R until it merged with WPP sister agency VML in 2018) has produced Cannes Lions-winning work over the past 10 years for clients including the Interreligious Council of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with whom it created ‘One Book for Peace’ and ‘One Poster for Peace’, which won Gold in 2017 and 2018. The work on this project helped to show Christians and Muslims that there is more they have in common than that which divides them.

On winning the award, Kalpesh Patankar, CCO of VMLY&R MENA, told Campaign Magazine Middle East: “Our big learning of the decade is that no matter where you work, you have to be willing to break the rules. I’m very grateful to all of the people who have brought us this far and contributed passionately to our story. In the next decade I hope we can write a story that is even bigger and bolder.”

Georges Barsoum, CEO of VMLY&R MENA, said: “This couldn’t have happened without wonderful clients who believed in our ‘connected brands’ philosophy, whereby great storytelling is empowered by technology to create brands that not only live in people’s culture but rather bend it to create impact. Thank you Cannes Lions for being such an inspiring platform that pushes the bar higher and higher.”

TBWA Hunt Lascaris, Johannesburg, South Africa and Ogilvy, Johannesburg, South Africa secured second and third rankings (respectively) for the MENA region.

WPP was named the best holding company in the rankings. The business, which has its headquarters in the UK and owns the Grey, Ogilvy, VMLY&R and Wunderman Thompson networks, was named Holding Company of the Year at seven straight Cannes Lions festivals from 2011 to 2017, although it was surpassed at the last two events by US rival Omnicom, which finished second over the decade, followed Interpublic who came in third.

Motivate Media Group and Motivate Val Morgan (the representatives of the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in the UAE) congratulates VMLY&R Dubai on winning this prestigious accolade.
