Fatma Al Suwaidi to Represent the UAE at the Cannes Lions Roger Hatchuel Academy 2022

Fatma Al Suwaidi, a third year student majoring in Advertising at American University in Dubai to represent the UAE at the exclusive Cannes Lions Roger Hatchuel Academy 2022

The Roger Hatchuel Student Academy, founded in 2003, is a unique learning experience designed to help students interested in pursuing a creative path in advertising launch their careers. Selected students learn first-hand from the world’s greatest brands, creative minds and industry leaders, and the programme takes place over the week of the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in Cannes, France.

As the official UAE representatives of the Cannes Lions Festival, Motivate Media Group and Motivate Val Morgan are delighted to announce that Fatma Al Suwaidi, a third year Visual Communications student majoring in Advertising at American University in Dubai (AUD), has been selected to represent the UAE at the exclusive Cannes Lions Roger Hatchuel Academy 2022

Fatma was one of the three recommended students from the UAE this year, alongside Kenzy Abedelmaksoud and Lillian Ghousseini also from AUD, whose submissions were reviewed by the Roger Hatchuel Academy selection panel – a diverse mix of global experts from reputed education institutions, the industry and related creative fields.

Commenting on being selected for this year’s Roger Hatchuel Academy, Fatma said, “If someone had told me at the start of my academic studies that I would become the passionate advertising creative I am today, I would not have believed them. Not because I thought I wasn’t capable, but because I grew in so many ways, that I exceeded my own expectations. I am nearing the end of my studies at AUD, but my journey in seeking knowledge is forever ongoing, and to be selected in my senior year to represent my country at the prestigious Roger Hatchuel Academy is an honor and I look forward to learning from the very best.”

“I am certain that attending the Cannes Lions Festival will be an experience packed with creativity, inspiration and just pure passion. My selection is a triumph I am proud of; however, it is not something that I accomplished alone, I owe my thanks to my family who supported me, my friends who were by my side, my university for giving me the foundation I need, and last but not least, Professor Dina Faour, a true role model every student would be lucky to have,” she added.

Dina Faour, Professor of Advertising, Department of Visual Arts, American University Dubai said, “We are so excited to witness yet another year for AUD at the one and only Cannes Lions and, specifically, at the Roger Hatchuel academy. This is a clear attestation to the program, the curriculum, the team, the students and the work. We wish Fatma AlSuwaidi a journey filled with inspiration and creativity, and we just know she’ll do us proud. We want to thank Cannes Lions for supporting students with this exclusive academy that joins the best students around the globe in one classroom and offers them such a unique insight into the industry. Thank you Motivate Media Group and Motivate Val Morgan, for being so professional, you certainly deserve to represent this festival.”

The Roger Hatchuel Academy class of 2022 will host 30 students in total, and throughout the week-long programme, students will dissect diversity and unlock a greater understanding of each other, the world and the nature of the industry.

Other areas covered include:

This year’s Roger Hatchuel Academy will run in parallel to the Cannes Lions Festival from 20 – 24 June 2022. Motivate Media Group and Motivate Val Morgan wishes Fatma Al Suwaidi the best of luck as she embarks on this journey, and we hope her experience and learnings at the Roger Hatchuel Academy will create positive impact and contribute to her future endeavours in the industry.

Gold Winners - Rebecca Ann Menezes & Eduardo Cesar

Gold Winner Young Lions 2022

Ana Julia De Oliveira and Jarrad Pitts from Impact BBDO bagged Silver, while Mayar Essawy and Francesco Negri from FP7 McCann won Bronze.

The jury panel for this year’s competition comprised of Louise Kotze Hussein (BPG Group), Giorgia Fattoracci (Leo Burnett), Bruno Barbosa (Saatchi & Saatchi), Yasmina Boustani (Impact BBDO), Rafael Augusto (Publicis Middle East), Andre Marchesi (Science & Sunshine), Claudia Canas (FP7 McCann), Muhammad Ali (Momentum MENA), Vivek Kukreti (Precise Communications) and Vijay Simon (You Experience).

This year’s client brief was from Goumbook, the leading social enterprise promoting sustainable living and green practices in the UAE and beyond since 2010, and the competition was sponsored by Getty Images.

Participating teams were challenged to develop a creative and innovative digital led campaign for Goumbook’s latest initiative  ‘Save the Butts – Waste to Value’ – the first sustainability initiative in the UAE that adopts a circular Economy approach to environmental pollution, that converts cigarette butts into a value-added material. The campaign goal was to raise awareness on the littering of cigarette butts and its negative impact on the environment, with a focus on promoting the initiative to corporates/companies and encouraging them to get involved.

Speaking at the online awards ceremony, Tatiana Antonelli, Founder of Goumbook, stated: ”Trillions of cigarettes are smoked annually, making cigarette butts the most common type of litter in the world. Due to the composition of butts being mainly plastic and toxic substances, this waste carries a very harmful risk for the environment and for living organisms, including humans. The ‘Save The Butts’ campaign aims to raise awareness and showcase alternative solutions to landfilling and incineration. We have identified technology to properly recycle this kind of waste and promote the recovery of materials in line with a circular economy approach and sustainable development. We welcome the local community, including individuals and businesses, to join the initiative, collect cigarette butts and help transform waste into value.”

Ian Fairservice – Managing Partner, Motivate Media Group, said: “After a stellar performance from the standout up-and-comers of the industry, it was particularly difficult to narrow down the top submissions. In the end there had to be a winning team – I want to congratulate everyone who participated, but especially the winners Rebecca and Eduardo from Saatchi & Saatchi ME, who I’m sure will be great ambassadors from the UAE during this year’s Cannes Lions event.”

The UAE Young Lions Digital Competition – hosted by Motivate Media Group and Motivate Val Morgan, supported by Getty Images, aims to unveil the brightest creative minds from across the UAE, and is part of the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity – the world’s biggest celebration of creativity in communications. 2022 will witness the return of the annual festival and will take place between 20th – 24th June at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, France.

Cannes Lions Returns to Cannes, France in June 2022

The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has confirmed that it will return to  Cannes, France, from 20-24 June 2022.

Philip Thomas, Chairman, LIONS, said, “We can’t wait to reunite the industry and bring the community together once again. For over 67 years, Cannes Lions has served as a convening force for the global creative community. As the world continues to shift and change we know that our role as conveners needs to evolve. Building Cannes Lions as a hybrid Festival will allow us to continue to reach our expanded creative community who we have welcomed through our digital initiatives over the last 18 months. It provides us with an opportunity to democratise, innovate and reinvent the Festival for the future.”

Plans for the Festival, which will build on LIONS Membership, the subscription-based, digital offering launched in March 2020, and which now has more than 10,000 members, are being developed to offer the global community even more flexibility and easier access to the home of creativity.

Simon Cook, Managing Director, LIONS, said, “We are putting the foundations in place to build a purposeful Festival that allows our community to come together in a meaningful way. Through highly curated content, community networking opportunities and agenda setting initiatives Cannes Lions will provide an annual forum for the global industry to address the most pressing issues the industry and world are facing today. In doing this, sustainability is top of mind for us – as it is for the industry – and we’ve committed to putting a sustainability agenda in place. Together with a number of partners, we are striving to deliver our most sustainable Festival in history.”

In early November 2021, LIONS opened its annual State of Creativity Study Designed to uncover the industry’s attitudes and approaches towards creativity, and paint an accurate picture of what will impact the creative economy tomorrow. The results of the study will form the LIONS 2022 editorial agenda across all of its platforms and events. Cannes Lions will open its call for content in January.

Speaking about the 2022 Cannes Lions juries, Susie Walker, VP, Awards & Insight, said, “Returning the Festival to Cannes means that we can once again bring our jurors together in person. Our unique judging technology allows us to carry out the initial judging stages remotely, but we’re delighted to be bringing the jurors back to Cannes to complete the final stages and award the Lions – as they have done since 1954. We can’t wait to hear the discussions and insights as our juries deep-dive into the work and set the global benchmark in creative excellence.”

Over the last 18 months, Cannes Lions, together with owners Ascential, has developed a health and safety standard that delivers industry best practice at live events. The Festival will adhere to the latest health guidelines leading up to and at the event. Cannes Lions will open for entries and registrations on 20 January 2022.

Cannes Lions Launches ‘Lions Live’

Lions Live is a digital education platform to support the creative community

Cannes Lions has introduced ‘Lions Live’, a digital education, inspiration and networking experience that will run throughout June under the theme ‘Creativity Matters’. Activity will build to a peak during the original dates of the Festival of Creativity, 22-26 June.

Lions Live will comprise masterclasses and hangouts with creative industry legends, lectures from experts, talks from speakers confirmed for the Festival, and a selection of the most impactful professional classes and learning modules from the world of creativity, effectiveness and marketing. The platform will also feature Future Gazers – a collection of industry experts who will assess how Covid-19 has transformed the way the industry will need to approach Cannes Lions’ already-announced 2020 themes. It will also showcase the best of the hundreds of responses to the current crisis from the global creative community currently being shared on the newly-launched Creativity Moves us Forward platform. Access to Lions Live: Creativity Matters will be free of charge to all.

The Work – the subscription-only archive of more than 200,000 Lions campaigns and 1,600 Festival talks – will be made freely accessible to all throughout the original Festival week, providing access to case studies and inspiration to help fuel ideas and creativity. Additionally, during June anyone will be able to access a specially curated course of lessons taken from the Cannes Lions masterclass series on 42courses.com. This will include lessons from the likes of Rei Inamoto, Keith Reinhard and Debbi Vandeven, on topics such as Creative Effectiveness, Strategy, Storytelling, Behavioural Science and Digital Marketing. Meanwhile, Cannes Lions’ sister companies MediaLink and WARC will also be bringing their Cannes activities to life, with a virtual MediaLink networking beach, and lessons on the very best effectiveness strategies from around the world presented by WARC.

Simon Cook, Managing Director of Cannes Lions, said “In order to drive progress through creativity, and support our community at this difficult time, we want to provide the global industry with the opportunity to learn and network throughout June and beyond. For the first time in nearly 70 years, we are unable to bring the industry together in one physical place in June. Lions Live: Creativity Matters will provide a virtual platform for the industry to collaborate, learn and problem-solve, because now more than ever, creativity really does matter.”
