VOX Cinemas Launches at City Centre Al Zahia in Sharjah

VOX Cinema opens a state-of-the-art 16-screen multiplex – the largest cinema in Sharjah, at City Centre Al Zahia in UAE.  

 

VOX Cinemas opened its newest cinema location at City Centre Al Zahia in Sharjah on 9th March 2021.

City Centre Al Zahia is home to 16 state-of-the-art screens with a total of 1,485 seats, and features Gold, VIP, MAX and Kids experiences. The opening marks the second VOX cinema in Sharjah, following the launch of the 12-screen cinema at City Centre Sharjah in June 2018.

City Centre Al Zahia – a Dhs 2.6bn project, is the twenty eighth mall in the region by the conglomerate Majid Al Futtaim, and the largest mall in the Northern Emirates. Mubadala launches a cinema campaign to celebrate UAE National Day

 

United Arab Emirates will celebrate 49 glorious years as a nation on 2nd December 2020. UAE National Day is one of the most celebrated days in the country as it marks the anniversary of the federal unification of the seven emirates (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al Quwain and Fujairah).

 

In celebration and honour of the nation’s leadership, history, values and progress, Mubadala booked a 60 sec. on-screen ad campaign through Motivate Val Morgan to screen across multiple locations in the UAE from 24th November – 14th December 2020.

Sharjah Film Platform Returns for its Third Edition

The third edition of the Sharjah Film Platform (SFP) organized by Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF), will take place from 14 – 21 November 2020, continuing the Foundation’s longstanding commitment to film programming and the support of established and aspiring filmmakers.

 

The Festival will screen award-winning and never-before-seen films, and include discussions and workshops – taking place across cinemas and online. Also part of the programme will be the distribution of awards by an international jury of distinguished directors, filmmakers and critics for outstanding cinematic productions screened during the festival, including Best Narrative, Best Documentary and Best Experimental Film.

 

Opening with the premiere of Soha Shukayr’s In the Time of Revolution – an original short film supported by SAF’s Short Film Production Grant 2020, the Festival will also feature 60 films from around the world, including the Middle East premiers of acclaimed films such as: The Shepherdess and The Seven Songs (2020), Eyimofe (This is My Desire) (2020) and Epicentro (2020), winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020.

 

Commenting on the third edition of SFP, Hoor Al Qasimi – Director of Sharjah Art Foundation said: “There is an exceptional community of filmmakers in the UAE and the surrounding region, and through the establishment of Sharjah Film Platform in 2018, we aimed to build on the SAF’s longstanding support for filmmakers and help bring their work to wider international audiences.”

 

“The substantial developments happening this year the inclusion of an online screening component for the festival and the launch of the SFP Industry Hub allow us to build on our commitment to films by bringing the work of incredible filmmakers from the region straight into the homes of viewers around the world and by creating new infrastructure to support emerging filmmakers and lay the groundwork for more risk-taking, experimental and exceptional films in the years to come,” added Al Qasimi.

 

Screenings will take place at SAF’s open-air Mirage City Cinema, the recently renovated Flying Saucer and the IMAX at Cinemacity – Zero 6 Mall in Sharjah. Meanwhile, online screenings will be hosted on SAF’s dedicated virtual Festival platform, which will also present the talks and workshops programme this year. The Industry Hub, launching for the first time, is a new initiative that aims to support film production and distribution in the MENASA region.

 

Cinema screenings are priced at Dh20 per screening, while online screenings will cost Dh10 per screening. An all-access online pass is also available for Dh50.

Cinemas Reopen in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Parts of UAE

More cinemas reopen in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and parts of UAE after the three month COVID-19 closure.

 

Saudi Arabia lifted its national curfew on June 21, 2020 and resumed commercial activities, which included the reopening of cinemas across the country. However, in line with government restrictions, social distancing remains in place and wearing of masks is mandatory.

VOX and Muvi Cinemas have opened its door to patrons who have dearly missed one of their favourite pastimes since the lockdown was imposed. The two cinema exhibitors also posted videos on their social media channels highlighting the safety and precautionary measures they have taken to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for cinemagoers:

Egypt significantly eased regulations against the spread of the coronavirus, cancelling the overnight lockdown on June 23, 2020, with cinemas among the list of venues allowed to reopen. VOX Cinemas Egypt opened its doors to the public on June 27, 2020, with all necessary health and safety measures in place – in line with government guidelines.

Following the reopening of cinemas in Dubai and Ajman, and as part of the reopening of economic and tourism activities, cinemas in in Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah also reopened at 50 per cent capacity on June 24, 2020. Individuals entering cinemas are still required to have their temperature checked at the entrance, wear face masks and observe physical distancing of two metres.

Cinemas in UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt will screen previously released blockbusters from 2019 and early 2020, until new blockbusters start releasing from July 2020.

Submissions for SICYFF 2019 Now Open

The 7th edition of the Sharjah International Children & Youth Film Festival (SICYFF) – formerly known as the Sharjah International Children Festival (SICFF), organized by Funn, will take place between 13th to 18th October, 2019.

This year’s festival will widen its scope and set new objectives which includes the participation of youth aged 18-30 years, in addition to children and teenagers. “The festival is open for all cinema professionals, aspiring filmmakers, and young film enthusiasts, in all categories. We hope that the seventh edition will take the festival to another new level, giving young talents the opportunity to promote the Arab film industry and make a mark in the regional and global film market,” said Shaikha Jawaher Bint Abdullah Al Qasimi, director of Funn and SICYFF

The goal of the festival in 2019 will be to create interest of the film industry for passionate children and youth of the UAE – to become inspiring future filmmakers, while fostering local filmmakers and motivating them to produce more children films – entertaining or informative.

Last year’s festival screened 138 films, which were selected from a pool of 502 films made by and for children.

As per its youth-focused theme, this year’s festival will showcase a variety of media and conduct movie workshops, and include the addition of three new categories – in addition to the existing seven categories:
